.58 cal., 40" barrel with a very good bore showing evident rifling with scattered fine oxidation mostly concentrated the first 6" from the muzzle. The barrel bears proper "V / P / (eaglehead)" inspector's markings and is also dated 1863. The lockplate is properly marked with Federal Eagle and "U.S. / NORWICH" ahead of hammer and is dated 1863 to rear of hammer. The metal surfaces are a medium gray patina with remnants of light pitting and staining with more active oxidation in the bolster area and some specks of freckling on the lock. All markings in the metal remain clear and legible. The walnut stock rates very good plus with a good deal of original finish remaining, well-defined edges, two good cartouches and "JAS. D. MOWRY" stamp in oval on left stock flat. The stock shows light handling marks from the years but appears original and untouched. The gun features standard original sights and comes with an iron tulip shaped ramrod. A quite nice example of a Mowry marked Norwich rifle-musket. (58752-64) {ANTIQUE} (1000/1500) SOLD FOR $1,265.00
