.36 cal., 27'' octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore, turned for starter. This little rifle features engraved and nickel plated lock, patent breech and barrel tang. Interestingly all of the stock furniture except for the patchbox is also nickel plated steel, the patchbox is of German silver. The lock is engraved with relief scroll at front and trear with a handsome repetitive geometric border. The lockplate is also marked ''N. LEWSI, MAKER / TROY, N.Y.'' while the top flat of the barrel is marked in a single line ''N. LEWIS TROY N.Y.''. The rifle features Lewis' typical barrel breech with scalloped left angled flat and with his familiar, fancy bolster. The iron triggerguard, semi-Swiss buttplate and toeplate all show very nice relief scroll engraving while the German silver patchbox shows scroll, a lovely shell border motif and an eight pointed star on the lid itself. The condition of the rifle is very nice with the barrel retaining a pleasing even mix of original blue and a smooth brown patina with very smooth surfaces and just a couple light tool impressions on either side just ahead of breech. The lock, bolster and tang retain 97% original nickel plated finish with engraving being crisp. The iron furniture all retains about 97% original nickel plated finish as well and the German silver patchbox has a pleasing mellow patina. The walnut stock shows some figure and features Lewis' typical long and low sloping cheekrest and subtle raised cheeks on either side of wrist just to the rear of the lock. The stock rates excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with scattered light handling marks and one filled check beneath the patchbox. The rifle is equipped with adjustable double set triggers and is sighted with a globe target front, simple open rear and a folding lollipop tang sight. The rifle comes with its original hickory ramrod with threaded worm present on one end and a brass tip on the other. This rifle is completely honest with no alterations of any kind. A handsome and nicely embellished example of Nelson Lewis' work. (18937-324) {ANTIQUE} [Cletus Klein Collection] (3000/5000) Sold For 3737.50
