16 bore, 28 1/2" barrels choked cylinder and improved modified with very good bright bores. The barrels are of Sir Joseph Whitworth's fluid compressed steel and bear Birmingham proof marks. Top rib is engraved "H. SCHERPING HOF-BUCHSENMACHER HANNOVER". The action and locks of this shotgun feature deep relief oakleaf engraving with beautifully executed game scenes depicting two auerhahn left side of frame, hunter with longarm left lock, two pheasant on right lock and running dog flushing two game birds right side of frame. The barrels feature one inch wedges of fine English style scroll engraving at breech along with a single gold band. The barrels retain that 95% old quality restored blue finish, the right tube showing an old minor ding, and an old nicely raised dent. The left tube has a couple extremely minor dings on it's underside. The action and locks bear a pleasing smooth gray patina. Top tang shows a fancy relief carved monogram with gold filled background. The checkered pistol grip buttstock has a stylized Monte Carlo cheek piece and fits beautifully, however the style seems later than the balance of the shotgun. The buttstock has been nicely refinished with freshened checkering on round knob pistol grip and a checkered butt. The forend features full coverage coarse checkering and is original. The triggerguard is of horn and the front trigger is a single set leading us to wonder if this gun originally had an extra set of combination barrels. A handsome German double with lovely engraving.
