serial #2643, 56 Spencer, 20" barrel with a mostly bright very good plus bore which shows scattered very light pitting, more moderate toward the breech end. The barrel is a pleasing dark mottled gray with scattered light flaky remnants of pale blue. The barrel band shows good mottled case-hardened colors as does the frame, retaining perhaps 60% antique color case-hardening after a light cleaning which has left the Burnside company marking and patent dates slightly light. The lockplate and hammer are primarily a mottled flaky case-hardened patina with generous traces of original colors on the lever. The buttplate shows some excellent arsenal-applied case colors. The walnut buttstock rates very good plus to near excellent with only minor handling marks and light dings and a very good left side cartouche at the rear of the sling bar base; the forend is in a similar state of condition. The lock mechanism is crisp and mechanically functional, this example has been fitted with the Stabler cut off and the underside of the barrel is numbered 20301.
