.69 Caliber, 26" barrel with a dark bore. This is an "SNY" marked, 1813 dated musket that has been converted to percussion and has been shortened to just above the middle barrel band. The metal has an overall gray patina with mild freckling in spots along the barrel and darker areas on the lock and sideplate. Old vise marks are present at the breech as well. The walnut stock has a dark military oil finish over minor handling marks and blemishes including a few small chips missing from the comb of the butt and wrist, however the inspector's cartouche is still visible behind the sideplate. The drum and nipple conversion is identical to known Confederate examples and utilizes a large drum with slightly convex end, 5/8" in diameter and 7/16" in height (two Confederate converted muskets using these distinctive drums are illustrated on page 540 of Confederate Rifles & Muskets by John M. Murphy M.D. and Howard M. Madaus, 1996; additionally, a musket cut down to musketoon length at the middle band without a front sight like this example is also illustrated on page 622 of the same book). The musketoon is outfitted with a shortened ramrod and is in fine condition as altered. This is a neat piece of Civil War history and would make a fine addition to any collection.
