NSN, 45-70 Govt, 20" barrel with a very good plus to near excellent bore which is mostly bright with sharp rifling but which shows a sparsely scattered light spot or two of pinprick pitting. The metal surface are primarily a pleasing smooth plum brown patina with generous traces of bright nitre blue in the protected areas. There are few spots of very light oxidation and minor handling marks or two, the bottom loading gate shows good pale blue-gray. The left-side "45/70" marking is light but visible with the maker's name and patent markings atop the bolt guide being strong. The walnut stock rates very good with much original varnish and overall minor dings and light handling marks. There is a crack from the right side of the upper tang toward the triggerguard but it is old, stable and will not flex. The sling swivels are intact as is the original carbine-style ladder rear sight and what appears to be the original dovetailed front sight atop the front band. The carbine-style buttplate has a trapdoor for cleaning implements (not present). This very rare carbine appears to be mechanically functional overall. Normally seen with 22" barrels, these 20" barrel short carbine's were produced in extremely limited numbers and are very rarely seen today. (34996-9) {ANTIQUE} (3000/5000) SOLD FOR $3737.50
