serial #48, 45 caliber, 32" octagon barrel with a very good bright bore. This rare rifle, one of less than 75 ever produced remains in very good condition. The frame features very tasteful 19th century loose scroll engraving as do tangs, triggerguard, buttplate tang and iron forend tip. The barrel retains 90% of an older restored brown finish which has a nice appearance with part of the second line of the barrel address very light but still legible. The barrel address reads "FRANK WESSON WORCESTER MASS / Long Range Rifle Creedmoor". The action retains about 60% original nickel plated finish with the balance bearing a pleasing smooth gray patina that is difficult to discern from the finish. The checkered straight grip buttstock and forend are of very highly figured walnut and rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with strong checkering. The checkered steel shotgun buttplate retains a fair amount of original nickel finish as does the forend cap. The rifle is sighted with a windgauge globe front and long range Vernier tang mounted peep sight. There is no provision for a rear barrel sight and the original heel position base (numbered to the rifle) is present. The rifle is listed in Grant's More Single Shot Rifles, Grant lists the chamber dimensions and states that the rifle will chamber a 45/60 but that is probably not the correct cartridge for the rifle. A good solid and generally honest example of these hard to find, fine quality antique American target rifles. (15006-42) {ANTIQUE} [Bill Brundage Collection] (5000/7000) SOLD FOR $8625.00
