serial #146066, 30 WCF, 22" round barrel with button magazine and a bright excellent bore. This rifle has very rare features including a factory matted barrel, tapered lightweight barrel, takedown and checkered pistolgrip stocks. This rifle shipped in 1902 and has two sets of assembly numbers on the lower left tang, one of which is neatly struck out. Number "14357" has been struck out and "478" added. The top tang inlet of stock is also stamped with number "478". The factory letter specifically states "checkered wood, plain" and lists no returns or repairs. However, this rifle was indeed returned to the factory for service as it has Winchester proofs on the barrel and action and the second set of assembly numbers. Every other detail of the letter is correct so we feel confident that the rifle was returned to Winchester after 1905 when the use of Winchester proofs started, for restocking and refinishing as the hammer and lever are blued and in 1902 would have been color case-hardened. Winchester began bluing hammers and levers around 1913 so the gun was serviced sometime after that point. The barrel and magazine retain about 75% bright original blue with nearly all loss being on the left side of barrel from muzzle back to the magazine tip where some type of contaminant stripped the finish leaving no pitting but gray smooth metal behind. The action retains about 80% original blue finish with loss due to even light flaking and then some streaks where this same contaminant removed the finish as it did on the barrel. Again the metal is smooth and free of pitting. The checkered pistolgrip walnut buttstock and forend are of nicely figured deluxe walnut and retain 90% original oil finish with strong checkering. The stock currently has a 12 3/4" length of pull over two 1/4" spacers and a solid rubber Winchester recoil pad. The rifle is sighted with a ramp mounted beaded blade front and nice Winchester four leaf express rear sight which we feel was installed upon return as the sight was first offered in the 1911 Winchester catalog. The included factory letter confirms the caliber, barrel length and matting, magazine, takedown, extra light and oil finish. The only things that do not match are the stock grade, pad and rear sight. This is an extremely rare Winchester 1894 rifle that shows honest factory updates. (17889-7) {C&R} [Allan Wilson Collection] (3500/5500) SOLD FOR $4,887.50
