The special order features include the part octagon barrel, shorter than standard magazine, case-hardened frame, deluxe wood and checkering. The rifle features matching assembly numbers on lower tang, stock inlet and on inside toe of buttplate. The condition of the rifle is wonderful with the barrel retaining about 90% original blue finish overall. The action retains over 90% original color case-hardened finish which has softened slightly over time but remains visible over nearly all of the action surfaces. The loading gate retains about half of its original fire blue while the dust cover and screw fastened rail retain nearly half of their original blue finish. The checkered straight grip walnut buttstock and forend are of nicely figured walnut and have a lovely rich dark russet color. The stocks rate near excellent with perhaps 90% original finish remaining and with scattered light handling marks and light bruises. The rifle comes with a correct four piece iron cleaning rod in butt and the buttplate retains about 70% faded original color case-hardened finish. The rifle is sighted with a great ivory blade front sight and what Madis describes as a "cloverleaf" rear barrel sight. The rifle comes with a five page George Madis letter outlining all the details of the rifle and stating that the rifle is "all original as made by Winchester". Madis was clearly impressed with this rifle, his enthusiasm for the rifle is unmistakable. The rifle also comes with a factory letter confirming the configuration including "case-hardened" and shows it being shipped on May 21, 1879. Second model thumbprint deluxe straight grip Winchester 1873 rifles are very rare and highly sought after, particularly when they are as fine and honest as this example.
