106. Custom Sharps Borchardt Model 1878 Single Shot Target Rifle

serial #20899, 38-55 Win, 30" round barrel with a bright excellent bore and a 1-in-16" twist. The barrel retains about 98-99% excellent quality rust blue with a neatly polished flat-crowned muzzle. The frame, lever and breechblock retain a similar amount of vibrant restored color case-hardening. The rifle is stocked classic style in a very nice grade of English walnut, showing some lovely grain figure and some light drying in the highly figured grain, it was filled when the rifle was stocked, the stocks rating excellent to very nearly as-new. The checkered capped pistolgrip buttstock and ebony-tipped forend feature flawlessly executed panels with sharp points and the butt features a 13 7/8" length of pull to the checkered gutta-percha "SRCo." buttplate; the frame features gutta-percha panels left and right. The rifle features a very nice globe front sight (no insert), adjustable for windage, with spirit level and a mid-range tang-mounted aperture sight at the rear. The barrel has been drilled and tapped for two steel target blocks, which are present, and the barrel features the "Old Reliable" and Sharps Rifle Company Bridgeport address. Included with the arm is its original 40 caliber 2 1/2", 30" round barrel showing perhaps 80% original blue and scattered light oxidation with some light pitting at the muzzle and an overall bright, about excellent bore, showing a couple of spots of light pitting, one nearer the muzzle, one halfway down its length. Also included are a breech seating tool, bullet mould, set of reloading dies, and 30 pieces of custom brass cases. Really a very nice antique single shot rifle with some really lovely grain, that according to the consignor will shoot an under 1" group at 200 yards.
