88. Winchester Model 1876 Deluxe Express Rifle

serial #24684, 50-95, 26" part round part octagon factory matted barrel with button magazine and an about good bore that shows good rifling throughout and some areas of moderate pitting. This rifle has numerous special order features including part octagon barrel, matted barrel, shorter than standard magazine, checkered pistolgrip stocks, checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate, factory engraved hammer and lever and factory sling swivels. The rifle shows honest use over the years and remains in completely original, untouched condition. The barrel retains about 10 - 15% original blue with the balance bearing a pleasing generally smooth gray patina. The barrel address remains on the top flat beneath the matting while the caliber designation shows the "50" on the top right flat and "CAL" on the top left flat. The action shows about 30 - 40% faded original color case-hardened finish that has taken on a german silver color and is blending with a smooth gray patina. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend rate very good with perhaps 70% original finish remaining and with strong checkering on wrist and with the forend checkering showing considerable wear from being carried. The checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate rates near excellent with no chips and just a little light wear. The hammer and lever show factory scroll engraving and the top of the dust cover is marked "WINCHESTER EXPRESS / 50 CAL. 95 GRS." the factory letter reads as follows: rifle, express, half octagon, matted barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock, shotgun butt, rubber butt plate, case-hardened, engraved & etc, received September 9, 1882 and shipped September 12, 1882. A 1971 dated Winchester Gun Museum letter is also included which lists all of the above and also has a note which reads "The original factory ledger also shows a notation "SSw", the meaning of which is unknown. We opt to go with its meaning being "Sling Swivels" as they are present and clearly original. The rifle is sighted with a beaded blade front and folding ladder rear sights. This rifle is consecutively numbered to the following two deluxe 1876 rifles. A nice honest big bore deluxe 1876 deluxe rifle with lots of special features.
