37. Sharps Model 1853 Slant Breech Sporting Rifle

serial #21740, .52 caliber, 27 1/2" octagon barrel with a very good bore showing deep clean rifling with just a couple small areas of light oxidation. The action and lock show all proper markings and the matching barrel bears the proper Hartford address. All markings remain clear and legible and the rifle is equipped with its standard factory single trigger. This is the earlier model 1853 rifle with brass patchbox and buttplate with fancy pewter forend tip. The condition of the rifle is quite nice with the barrel retaining about 40% original blue blending evenly with a brown patina and with some scattered light patches of surface oxidation and pinprick pitting. The action and lock bear a rich smooth brown patina with generous traces of original color case-hardened finish visible. The plain walnut buttstock and forend rate excellent and may have been very lightly cleaned at some point over the years but they retain a nice surface, great color and nice clean edges. There is a small 1/4" long sliver missing from lower edge of lockplate which is very minor and barely warrants mention. The rifle is sighted with a German silver blade sporting front and an adjustable folding ladder rear. This is a nice honest Slant Breech Sporting Rifle.
