serial #228638, 30-06, 24" 8-18 dated Rock Island Arsenal barrel with a bright excellent bore which shows some very light softening nearer the throat. The metal surfaces are an overall deep gray parkerized patina, the bolt body showing light operational wear with some minor impact marks on the knob. The bolt shroud and safety show some very good oil-quenched case-hardening. The bottom metal is a mix of blue and faded parkerizing with light dings and handling marks throughout. The straight-grip walnut stock and handguard rate about very good with overall minor dings, dents and handling marks from the years. The left side shows dual "AAJ" acceptance stampings (Springfield Armory 1918-20) within rectangular boxes as well as "AA/W" arsenal rebuild marking with a fading circled serifed "P" firing proof. The original open sights are intact and there is a nice stamped sheet-metal front sight protector present. The arm has been custom fitted at some later date with a Warner & Swasey Model 1908 Telescopic Musket Sight (serial #1221). The left side of the receiver has been neatly drilled and tapped for the base, the stock only very slightly inletted, and the sight mounted, its mounting rail reading on its interior surface "For Rifle No. 409722". The sight itself rates about very good with crisp markings and three purposefully-filed hashmarks on the left side of its top cover, no doubt during the period of use, to be certain the scope was returned to its rifle during field cleaning sessions. The black lacquer is likely a repaint and shows light crackling throughout with overall light flakes, dings and handling marks from the years. The optics are bright, clean and crisp, the adjustments rather stiff. The original rubber eyecup is included, it has hardened and degraded with the years and is now nearly flat from poor storage (there are replacement eyepieces available in commercial channels). There is a nickel oiler-thong kit in place beneath the butt trap. Overall a very attractive First World War "sniper" very neatly done, with a nice honest look. (38238-35) {C&R} (2500/4000) SOLD FOR $1,840.00
