serial #260769, 12 ga., 20" plain barrel choked cylinder (marked CYL.) with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this outstanding shotgun retain about 97% original blue, the loss is due to some light wear near the muzzle where there are a few rub marks, high edge wear and operational wear on the magazine tube. There are the scattered light handling marks one would expect here and there from the years and there is some scattered light oxidation on the receiver, primarily on its belly near the serial number. The screw heads remain true and unmaligned with only one showing some very minor slot damage at the magazine tube hanger. There is very good pale fire temper blue on the trigger spring and the hammer has some very nice color case-hardening. The plain pistolgrip buttstock and grooved forend rate very good to very good plus with much original varnish and the expected minor dings and handling marks from the years. The stock shows drying cracks left and right at the receiver, each about 1 1/2" in length and there is one additional crack at the front of the forend. The right side of the buttstock has been neatly branded during the period of use "PM DEPT/CRR OF NJ/05", denoting "Paymaster Department, Central Railroad of New Jersey, (Gun) No. 5" . The arm, being an early 1897, was built as a solid frame and remains in very nice condition and operates well mechanically. A very nice early Winchester model 1897 Riot with some very cool railroad property markings. (38585-113) {C&R} (2000/2500) SOLD FOR $4,600.00
