About .42 cal, 29 1/4" octagon barrel with an oxidized bore. The barrel is an overall even mix of plum brown and dull pewter gunmetal gray, showing sparsely scattered light oxidation here there and the expected light dings and handling marks from the years. The rifle features a simple blade front sight and v-notch semi-buckhorn rear is and is maker marked on its left diagonal flat "DH Hilliard/Cornish/NH". The long tang is a dull pewter patina and shows loose open foliate engraving and all of the brass furniture has toned to a dull goldenrod patina. The curly maple stock rates very good showing a bit of a light cleaning with some added finish, retaining a few light dings and handling marks from the years. It features a nice pendulum style brass patchbox and left-side flared shadowline cheekpiece. The gun functions mechanically and a later ramrod is included. "Uncle Dave" Hilliard was active 1842-1877.
