146. Rare Whitney Kennedy Large Caliber Lever Action Rifle

serial #324, 45-75, 24" octagon barrel with full magazine and a very good bright bore that shows just a little light pitting. This is a very unusual Whitney Kennedy rifle. The rifle features a full loop lever, single line Whitneyville address with "KENNEDY" in block letters and the later style (post 2800 serial number) top tang marking. The gun shows matching numbers on bottom of barrel beneath forend, on lower tang, side of lever and on inside toe of buttplate. While this combination of features do not line up chronologically according to Maxwell's book, it is clear that this rifle is all original as produced by Whitney. The barrel and magazine retain about 30% evenly thinning original blue finish which is blending with a pleasing smooth brown patina. The action shows about 75% original blue finish with most loss on the belly and high edges. The walnut buttstock is clearly deluxe with lots of figure, the forend is more plain and both are uncheckered and appear original. Mr. Steadman's notes read "Super rare caliber & first model receiver - 1 of 400. 3x wood, excellent+ condition. Prototype? First model #325 is in Winchester Museum". This is a very rare and interesting rifle for the advanced Whitney-Kennedy / Andrew Burgess collector. (18315-107LTS255) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T. Steadman Collection] (4000/6000) SOLD FOR $8,625.00
