3. Exceptional Colt Detective Special Square Butt Revolver

Click on images for enlarged versions.

serial #403067, 38 special, 2" barrel with a bright excellent, likely unfired, bore. The metal surfaces on this lovely early square butt revolver retain about 99% original blue, with no appreciable loss and perhaps one or two tiny handling marks here or there and a tiny spot of oxidation at top left frame. The bright-polished sides of the hammer remain brilliant as does the color case-hardening on the ejector rod head. The checkered walnut grips with silver Rampant Colt medallions rate excellent; they are un-numbered but their fit is perfect and they are clearly original to the gun. There is no flash evidence on the front face of the cylinder, no turn ring present, and the breech and forcing cone of the barrel remain brilliant in-the-white. The revolver comes in its original purple-tone hinge-top box numbered to the gun on the bottom with a boar bristle brush, "Special Instructions" cleaning pamphlet and test target pencil-numbered to the gun (the serial number has been re-penciled at some point and is slightly darker but is clearly an original number). The box itself rates very good plus with some very minor wear on the corners, a small tear on its rear spine and has the "Detective Special" surcharge label. An absolutely super example overall, likely unfired since leaving the blue dome in 1931. (38638-21) {C&R} (2000/3000) SOLD FOR $3,220.00
