serial #23750, 20 bore, 27" barrels choked cylinder and about modified (.012" constriction). This is a wonderful double that has been engraved and gold inlaid by master engraver Marcello Pedini. The engraving consists of wonderful relief intertwined foliate scroll accented with over 100 small gold inlaid blossums and accents within the scroll. The sidelocks and belly of action show large gold inlaid sporting scenes with finely executed bulino engraved backgrounds. The right lock shows two large inlaid dogs pursuing a duck, the belly shows two dogs in a resting position and the left shows two dogs on shore while a duck is taking flight from the water. The action is finished in a wonderful French gray which shows off the engraving beautifully. The forend metal is engraved in fine scroll with over forty small gold inlaid accents. The barrels have a small wedge of scroll on the rib at breech and the breech of the barrels show twenty-two small gold inlaid accents around their circumference. The gun features cocking indicators and a non-selective single trigger within the right side rolled edge triggerguard. The barrels were originally proofed with 2 1/2" chambers for 7/8 oz. loads, they were subsequently reproofed with 2 3/4" chambers and 950 BAR. The condition of the shotgun is lovely with the Whitworth steel barrels retaining 98% wonderful quality re-blacked finish with the rib showing South Audley Street address with maker name "J. Purdey & Sons" filled with gold. The action shows nearly all of its gray finish with engraving remaining sharp and crisp. The checkered straight grip buttstock and beavertail forend are of beautifully figured European walnut and may be superb quality custom replacements. The stocks fit very nicely and buttstock shows nicely cut dropper points and very crisp checkering. The gun has nice dimensions with the 14 5/8" length of pull over a checkered butt and with drops of 1 5/8" and 2 3/4". The shotgun comes in a leather case with Purdey maker label and a label showing proofing and chamber data. This is a wonderful 1928 production Purdey that has been finely custom upgraded by master engraver Marcello Pedini. An attractive, quick pointing little Purdey with modern proofs, ready to go afield.
