serial #3993, 38-55, 30" octagon No. 3 weight barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a very handsome and completely honest Deluxe High Wall rifle. The rifle is in the typical Special Single Shot configuration with deluxe checkered pistolgrip stocks with cheekpiece and Swiss butt, mid-range Vernier rear and windgauge front sights. The lower left tang is marked with assembly codes "1178 XX SBC E" while the top tang inlet of stock is marked "1178" and the inside toe of buttplate is marked with a small "78". The condition of the rifle is wonderful except for the barrel which retains about 50% original blue finish overall with loss due to cleaning with steel wool and with high edges being gray and flats thinned to varying degrees. The barrel is smooth with only a couple tiny patches of pinprick pitting present. The action shows 95% strong original color case-hardened finish which is just softened slightly and has a wonderful appearance. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend rate excellent with nice figured, crisp checkering, 97% original finish and just a few scattered light handling marks. The Swiss buttplate retains about 95% evenly thinning original nickel plated finish. The rifle is equipped with a standard trigger, windgauge front, standard sporting rear and a mid-range Vernier tang mounted peepsight. While we generally do not recommend restoration in most instances, this is an exception to that "rule" and we feel that this rifle would benefit from a top-quality finish restoration on the barrel, but would suffer if it was not done correctly. Many, including this writer consider the Special Single Shot the most beautiful of High Wall configurations. A lovely Winchester rifle. (18714-1) {ANTIQUE} (4000/6000) SOLD FOR $4,887.50
