596. U.S. Model 1850 Presentation Foot Officer's Sword by Clauberg

30 1/4" blade is maker marked on the reverse ricasso "W / CLAUBERG / SOLINGEN" with knight trademark. The blade is etched with floral patterns and stands of arms and remains in extremely fine condition with bright blade and very crisp etch. The hilt is of gold washed brass and rates excellent with generous traces of gold wash and the balance bearing a pleasing mellow patina. The leather scabbard has gold washed brass fittings and bears an oval plaque affixed to a thin band with rope type border and the following inscription "Presented to Ord. Sergt, John Simpson, Jr / by his friends in the 9th Regiment N.Y.S.N.G. / NOV, 29" 1871 / Henry C. Jessup, J.D. Dunlap, S.A. Schoonmaker / N.D. Ward, Wm. J. Close, A.J. Donnegan, H.W. Kelley". The condition of the scabbard is near excellent with generous amounts of gold wash remaining on the fittings and the balance showing a pleasing mellow patina. We have no information on Simpson but further research could only further enhance this sword. (18674-27) (800/1200) SOLD FOR $632.50
