61. U.S. Model 1863 Type I Rifled Musket by Springfield Armory

Click on images for enlarged versions.

.58 Cal, 40" barrel with a very good bore that shows scattered light to moderate oxidation but strong rifling. The lockplate and hammer retain a generous amount of their original case colors with some oxidation staining and small spots of light pitting. The in-the-white parts appear partially bright with some small dings on barrel, moderate pitting on buttplate, scattered light pitting and oxidation staining. The walnut stock rates very good plus with two strong inspector's cartouches, a small crack behind lockplate, a small chip behind upper tang, a few chips in the cleaning rod channel, a few dings and scattered handling marks. The lockplate is dated 1863, the barrel lacks a discernable date but it is marked with a "V/P" proof with the P appearing faint. A fine example of these 1863 Springfield muskets.
