serial #5404, .44 CF (long straight "stovepipe" cartridge), 26 1/2" octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel retains about 90% original rust blue, the loss is due primarily to even fading and some light muzzle wear. The frame retains perhaps 92% original color case-hardening, the balance muting and toning to a mottled case-hardened patina. It is overall engraved with a lovely flowing foliate oakleaf decoration with background punch-dot shading, the left side with a bellowing elk, the right side with a rehbock. The belly of the frame and the lever as well show the same nice oakleaf engraving, the lever toned to a pewter patina. The checkered capped pistolgrip Circassian walnut buttstock rates very good plus to excellent showing the expected minor dings and handling marks from the years and with lovely grain figure. The smooth forend is similar showing perhaps a bit more wear. The gripcap is horn and there is a nice horn accent from the rear of the triggerguard to the cap itself. The length of pull to the checkered bone buttplate is 14 1/2". The arm is equipped with double set triggers which operate properly and is sighted with a simple silver bead front sight, the receiver was drilled and tapped for some manner of aperture sight which is no longer present. It was original equipment as the steel surrounding the holes is un-engraved, it would seem a simple matter to have one fabricated. As well the barrel shows two vacant dovetails where there were once dual-claw scope bases mounted, again they are not present but any gunsmith worth his salt can fabricate bases and rings. Right diagonal flat is marked "Aug Wolf", left diagonal flat "Suhl". As with any arm of unknown chambering a competent gunsmith should determine the caliber and then check the headspace before any thought is given to using the arm. Once that is done that this should make an awesome stalking rifle for deer and bear-sized game. (38664-3) {C&R} (600/800) SOLD FOR $1,725.00
