serial #63954, 45-50 Peabody Sporting, 25 5/8" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is an interesting rifle that remains in very nice original condition. The action and barrel show no makers mark which is unusual as the side of the action is usually marked with the Providence Tool marking. The only markings on the rifle are on the bottom of the barrel beneath the forend near action "63954" and "445". The barrel shows a very neatly filled dovetail just ahead of the action where these rifles sometimes have rear barrel sights. The fill is very neat and the blue is old and looks original showing some faint brown patina coming through. The action and lock retain about 85% original color case-hardened finish overall that has just softened slightly over the years. The checkered straight grip buttstock and forend are of walnut and rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with nice raised grain and crisp checkering. The wrist checkering is interesting in that it wraps around the bottom in one pattern and then on the top of the wrist the pattern opens to a larger diamond pattern with flat tops rather than pointed diamonds. The top of the wrist also shows a diamond shaped German silver inlay affixed by a single screw at center, this is presumably a monogram plate and it remains plain. The forend has a steel cap and the rifle is equipped with its original steel crescent buttplate. The rifle is sighted with a windgauge front with spirit level and a mid-range Vernier tang mounted peepsight mounted at the rear of the top tang. These outside hammer Peabody sporters are sleek and attractive rifles that are also quite scarce. (18615-2) {ANTIQUE} (3500/5500) SOLD FOR $5,175.00
