serial #C,33188, 45-70, 28" octagon barrel with a bright very good plus bore showing some light frosting scattered about. This is an interesting Sharps rifle which began life as a New Model 1863 carbine which was then metallic cartridge converted and subsequently rebarreled and converted to a sporting rifle. The original barrel number beneath the forend (156494) is neatly struck through and the matching number "33188" stamped adjacent to the original number; this is typical of guns rebarrelled by the factory. The stock is the original carbine stock with sling bar removed and base machined flush with the stock. The corresponding hole in the left side of the action is neatly factory filled. The barrel shows the "Old Reliable" trademark and a Bridgeport address with "CALIBRE 45" on top flat and "2 1/10" on left flat. The barrel retains perhaps 40% original blue overall which is thinning evenly and blending with a generally smooth brown patina with some silvering along the high edges. The frame retains a pleasing rich mix of a dull gray patina and mottled original color case hardened finish. The lock shows a good deal of faded original color case-hardened finish which has taken on a smooth pewter color. The patent dates on the left side of the action are light which is to be expected on a rifle like this, that was factory reconditioned. The plain walnut buttstock and schnabel tipped forend rate very good plus with lots of finish on the butt and less on the forend which shows honest carry wear. Interestingly the forend shows a mirror image of the struck through barrel number as well as the new number. The rifle is fitted with factory adjustable double set triggers and sighted with a German silver blade Rocky Mountain front and large buckhorn sporting rear. In addition to the two factory holes for tang-mounted sights there is one additional hole just behind the forward tang screw, this is the only alteration that doesn't appear to have been done by the factory. A very interesting Sharps sporting rifle chambered for an excellent cartridge. (138681-5) {ANTIQUE} (3000/4000) SOLD FOR $3,450.00
