serial #5835i, 9mm, 4" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this 1940-dated pistol retain about 95% original blue with some high edge wear, a few tiny pits on the sideplate, a couple scratches and handling marks. The receiver is starting to tone to plum and the ejector has a nice rich plum color. The checkered walnut grips are stamp-numbered to the gun and remain in very good plus condition with a couple scattered light chips on both panels, minor dents, light staining and handling marks. All visible serialized parts are matching, including the grooved firing pin. This pistol includes two magazines, the first is matching to the gun with an additional "+" and is a Type 3 Haenel-produced blue-bodied magazine. The second is an "(Eagle) / 655" Waffenamt-marked blue-bodied Type 2 magazine numbered to gun 4643z. Also included is a black leather flap holster coded jkh / 41 (Carl Busse) with crisp "(Eagle) / WaA286" and unmarked blue loading tool. The holster is in overall very good condition showing some spots of minor staining, scattered scuffs, scratches and handling marks. Included with the arm, is a set of correspondence (letters) from Mr. Howard to Admiral Shelley, asking if he would sell him his collection, and replies from the Admiral to the affirmative. While not mentioned in the correspondence specifically, a handwriten draft from Mr. Howard mentions two lugers, a 32 Nauser Pocket Auto, a 9mm Browning Auto, a 32 P37 pocket auto and a P38 auto. There is also a collection inventory card with this pistol that notes it was purchased from the collection of Admiral Shelley who acquired a number of captured and surrendered weapons during his service. One return letter from the Admiral states:"....these were taken from dead Germans by me personally and by members of my intelligence team". Overall a superb wartime Luger rig for the military collector. (138569-35) {C&R} [Calhoun L.H. Howard Collection] (1200/1800) SOLD FOR $2,530.00
