serial #1780, 38 RF, 7 1/2" part round part octagon barrel with a fair bore that shows considerable oxidation and pitting however rifling is visible the entire length. This revolver has all matching numbers on the backstrap, triggerguard, frame, barrel, cylinder, loading lever, loading lever catch and wedge. Aside from the serial numbers the only marking on the revolver is "CSA" on the top flat of the barrel near breech. This revolver was converted to cartridge during the period of use by milling the rear of the cylinder to where the nipple recesses were removed and the cylinders were open straight through. The ratchet teeth at rear of cylinder were left so they protrude 1/4" from the rear of the cylinder. The face of the recoil shield has had a 1/4" spacer added to take up the space left by the cylinder alteration. The hammer is the original percussion hammer which has had a rimfire striker added to the upper face of the hammer and it is affixed to both the face of the hammer and the underside of the hammer's flash guard. The condition of the gun is quite nice with the iron surfaces bearing a rich gray-brown patina with some scattered patches of light pitting present. The frame shows crude tool marks and casting flaws which are so common on Southern made guns. The brass gripstraps show a lovely mellow patina with the buttstrap screw no longer present. The one piece walnut grip rates very good. This is a very honest and authentic revolver which was part of the Cliff & Lynne Young Collection of Boston, for many years. Cliff Young was one of the preeminent collectors and scholars of Confederate arms, collecting them since the early 1950's. He was an early member and former director of the prestigious American Society of Arms Collectors as well as a former President, Board Member and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Massachusetts Arms Collectors. A terrific opportunity for the Civil War collector to acquire a super-rare metallic cartridge converted Leech & Rigdon revolver. (18568-10) {ANTIQUE} (10000/20000) SOLD FOR $13,800.00
