serial #221286, 30-06, 24" 9-12 dated Rock Island Arsenal barrel with an about very good bore which shows strong rifling but with light frosting its full-length. The barrel is primarily a pewter patina with some sparsely scattered plum oxidation speckling while the receiver shows good dual-tone gray and brown mottled oil quenched case-hardening. The bolt shows strong remnants of original rust blue with the handle and knob toning to plum, the shroud shows some silvery case-hardened remnants with the striker toned to a plum. The bottom metal shows some strong original rust blue mixing with some toning to plum, light handling marks and wear to pewter on the sharp edges. The straight grip walnut single bolt buttstock and handguard rate very good showing an old very light cleaning with a circled un-serifed P firing proof to the rear of the triggerguard and a light 1913 cartouche on the left stock flat. The trapdoor buttplate is finely checkered, there is a drying crack on the left side of the stock at the butt and the bands show some handling marks and light scratches. Included is a stamped sheet metal front sight protector and 1918-dated 1 1/4" military rifle sling. As with all low-numbered 1903 Springfield rifles, this arm is sold only as a collectors item for the student of 1903 rifles and military arms and no thought of loading live ammunition nor of firing the arm should be entertained. A very nice 1912-manufactured Rock Island '03. (38809-69) {C&R} (1800/2200) SOLD FOR $1,725.00
