149. U.S. Model 1903 Rifle Rimfire-Converted by Niedner

serial #610459, 22 LR, 25" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel retains about 97% maker-applied rust blue with the receiver showing excellent mottled dark oil-quenched case-hardening. The balance of the metal parts show a faded gray-blue with numerous minor handling marks and light dings. The military straight grip walnut stock and handguard rate about very good with much original arsenal varnish and overall minor dings and handling marks, the serifed P firing proof only faintly visible showing two faint left-side cartouches and a Raritan Arsenal rebuild mark ahead of the magazine cut off. The rifle has been converted by Niedner to single shot 22 LR, his case-hardened loading platform in place at the breech of the action, the bolt neatly converted to rimfire and the striker lightened. The front section of the bolt retains some good color case-hardening and is Niedner-marked, the bolt itself showing fading original blue, the shroud with some very good oil-quenched case-hardening. The rifle has been drilled and tapped for steel target blocks which are present, the original 1903 rear sight has been removed and the gun is sighted with a Lyman brass bead front in the original sight base and a Lyman receiver sight on the rear ring. Overall a very neat example which would be fun to put through the paces at the range. (former Michael Petrov collection) (38799-17) {C&R} (2000/2500) SOLD FOR $3,450.00
