.58 cal., 40" round barrel with a near very good bore that shows nice rifling its entire length with some patches of pitting here and there. This rifle musket is in very nice condition. The lock bears proper markings and is dated 1863 while the barrel shows proper "V / P / (eaglehead)" inspector's marks and is also dated 1863. The metal surfaces are a smooth silver gray color overall, probably lightly and very professionally "brightened up" at some point but all markings are clear and legible and there is no pitting or oxidation staining of any kind. The stock is also excellent with 95% oil finish remaining, nice clean edges and no evidence of ever being cartouched. It is possible that the stock was also very lightly and professionally cleaned. There is a large numeral "28" stamped just ahead of the buttplate tang. A very nice bright 1861 contract musket by Mason of Taunton. (18752-57) {ANTIQUE} (1500/2500) SOLD FOR $1,840.00
