42. Whitney Burgess Morse 1878 Second Model Sporting Rifle

serial #785, 45-70, 28" octagon barrel with full magazine and a good plus bore that shows strong rifling throughout but is a little dark with scattered pitting. This is an interesting second model which shows transitional features. The frame has the omitted third screw on left rear of action, the serial number is marked internally and the nosecap remains wedge fastened. It was during the second model production that the external serial number started to appear along with the screw-fastened nosecap. Maxwell states that the transition to external numbers happened somewhere between serial numbers 731 and 802, this rifle #785 helps narrow that window somewhat. The barrel bears the proper "G.W. MORSE" address which reads toward muzzle, all markings in metal remain clear and legible. The barrel and magazine retain a pleasing smooth brown patina overall and remain quite smooth and generally free of pitting. The action shows the same smooth brown patina and features the dust cover with two reinforcing screws and second gas escape hole. The walnut buttstock and forend show some nice figure and rate very good as refinished with a glossy varnish finish. The rifle is sighted with a German silver blade Rocky Mountain front and open sporting rear sights. A very interesting and scarce Burgess Morse sporting rifle. (18315-8LTS40) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T. Steadman Collection] (3000/4000) SOLD FOR $3,162.50
