serial #2565A, 256 Gibbs Magnum, 26" barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a wonderful rifle which bears action number "2565A" and barrel number "B5420". The barrel is not marked with Gibb's address but the caliber designation is engraved "FOR GIBBS' / 256 MAGNUM / CARTRIDGE ONLY" on boss at breech adjacent to the London nitro proofs. The metal surfaces of the rifle retain about 95% original blue finish overall with loss in the typical wear spots and on high edges with some flaking on the butterknife bolt handle. The stock is of European walnut and rates excellent with 97% original finish remaining and with strong clean checkering. The barrel is held in placed by a large set screw entering from the bottom of the stock just ahead of floorplate and also a protruding pin and corresponding hole to accept in the flat steel stock plates at takedown junction, so the forend must be removed to facilitate take down. The stock features a steel gripcap with compartment which is empty and retains lots of bright original case color. The buttplate is a checkered steel shotgun style buttplate with both screws indexed properly and checkered as one with the buttplate. The toeline of the buttstock shows a silver oval monogram plate which remains plain along with a sling eye, corresponding sling eye is neatly affixed to the bottom of the barrel. The rifle is sighted with a ramp mounted beaded blade front with single standing and four folding leaf express rear sight graduated for 100, 300, 500, 700 and 900 yards. The 256 Gibbs Magnum performs similar to the 257 Roberts but will handle a heavier projectile giving it better penetration on larger game. A wonderful British magazine sporting rifle built on a popular and proven split bridge action. (18865-71) {C&R} (2000/3000) SOLD FOR $3,737.50
