serial #8589, 270 win, 22? custom sporter contour barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this lovely rifle retain about 98-99% excellent-quality maker blue with the bolt body and extractor neatly polished bright. The classic style stock is of very nicely figured fiddleback-grain American walnut and rates very good plus with the expected minor dings and handling marks that come with a hunted arm. The stock features flawlessly executed borderless panels at the grip with a wraparound pattern on the forearm and has a very nice flared left-side cheekpiece. The length of pull to the checkered steel Niedner buttplate is 13 3/8? and there is a checkered blued steel pistolgrip cap and gold oval monogram plate along the toeline which is un-engraved. The arm has been neatly drilled and tapped and currently supports a steel one piece Buehler base with 1? Buehler rings. These actions featured a hinged floorplate and an extremely nice sporting bolt handle has been fitted with teardrop checkered panels top and bottom of knob. A fully adjustable Jaeger trigger has been fitted and tuned for a crisp clean, about 4# let off and a model 70-style wing safety has been neatly fitted to the bolt shroud; the thumbpiece has been removed from the boltstop and the front face very neatly checkered for a streamlined appearance. The arm comes with a spare 257 Roberts 22? barrel of identical contour, also with a bright excellent bore, both are maker marked at top dead center and both are neatly engraved with their respective calibers. Each barrel features an index mark along with a .190? deep .200? diameter hole on its bottom dead center beneath the chamber area, which would accommodate a spanner wrench for removing and installing the barrels (precluding the need for an elaborate barrel vice set up), while the spanner is not present, one could easily be made by any gunsmith worth their apron. George Schielke of Titusville New Jersey was a gifted craftsman and extremely well-thought-of turning out some very lovely sporters in the 60s, this example dated July 28, 1963 in the barrel channel. A handsome rifle with graceful lines and flawless execution, shouldering as a natural extension of the hunter. Top-notch. (38893-4) {C&R} (2000/3000) SOLD FOR $1,840.00
