serial #109, 45-70, 28" octagon barrel with full magazine and a very good bore. This early rifle shows the extra gas escape hole in top of dust cover along with the two added reinforcing screws as is typically found on these guns along with the early wedge fastened nosecap. This appears to be a special- order rifle as it has a nickel plated buttplate and nosecap along with upgraded wood. The rifle remains in nice condition with the barrel and magazine retaining about 40% original blue finish blending with a gray brown patina and a scattered patch or two of light pitting. The action retains about 80% original blue with the primary loss being on the belly and high edges and the balance due to even light thinning and light scratches. There are also some halos around some of the frame screws where they were removed with too large a screw driver bit. The walnut buttstock and forend are of nicely figured American black walnut and rate near excellent with 90% original finish remaining. The forend shows light carry wear. The rifle has all matching numbers on the frame, barrel, buttstock, tangs and buttplate. The rifle is sighted with a Beach style combination front, standard open sporting rear and a period tang mounted peepsight. These early rifles did not come ready to accept tang sights so this rifle has a pair of period added holes in the top tang, one passing through the Burgess patent markings. This is an extremely rare and extremely early Burgess Morse sporting rifle. (18315-6LTS37) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T. Steadman Collection] (7000/9000) SOLD FOR $6,037.50
