52. Whitney Burgess Morse First Model Lever Action Sporting Rifle

serial #284, 45-70, 28" octagon barrel with full magazine and a very good bore. The barrel shows the Morse patent information while the top tang shows the Burgess patent information and shows no Whitney markings, which is correct for this model. The dust cover is original and correct with two forward reinforcing screws and dual gas escape ports. The metal surfaces of the rifle show an even smooth gray brown patina with some scattered light oxidation staining, a few very light surface marks and a very small amount of light pitting. All markings remain clear and legible and edges remain crisp and well-defined. The plain walnut buttstock and forend rate good plus with added finish and some old filler repair on the left side of the wrist. Stocks are sound and have a decent appearance. The rifle is sighted with a German silver blade Rocky Mountain front and standard open sporting rear sights. A good solid example of these seldom-encountered American lever guns which competed with the big Winchester 1876. (18315-20LTS287) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T. Steadman Collection] (2500/3500) SOLD FOR $2,875.00
