serial #788, 45-70, 28" octagon barrel with full magazine and a good plus bore that shows strong rifling its entire length along with some scattered pitting throughout. This rifle is marked on top tang "A. BURGESS / PATENTED JANY. 7TH, 1873 / PATENTED OCT. 19TH 1875". The top of the barrel is marked "G.W. MORSE / PATENTED OCT. 28TH 1856" reading toward muzzle and "45 CAL. 70 GR. C.F.-" reading toward action. The metal surfaces of this rifle retain an even brown patina overall with some scattered patches of mostly light pitting present. All markings in metal remain clear and legible and most screw heads show some slot wear. The plain walnut stocks rate very good with about 70% original finish remaining and with numerous light handling marks and bruises, particularly on the forend. The rifle is sighted with a German silver blade Rocky Mountain front and standard open sporting rear. The lever does not stay in the upright position when the gun is vertical. This is a good solid example of these scarce, early Whitney produced lever guns. (18315-17LTS219) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T. Steadman Collection] (1500/2500) SOLD FOR $2,760.00
