serial #11293, 16 ga. by 8x57R, 25 1/2? barrels with bright excellent bores, the shotgun barrel choked improved cylinder and showing remnants of extremely light pinprick pitting or perhaps oxidation staining. The barrels retain about 95% fading original gray-blue with the oddly scattered very wide handling mark here or there. They feature a lovely hand matted rib with retailer marking in field ?Fr. Weissbach Frankfurt?. The scalloped boxlock frame retains perhaps 40% original color case-hardening and shows the highest-quality flowing scroll and floral engraving with banknote filigree around the hinge pin. The face of the standing breech features the ?GM? (in shield) trademark of Gebruder Merkel. The checkered capped pistolgrip European walnut buttstock and field style forend rate very good to perhaps very good plus with much original varnish and the overall very light dings and handling marks that come from the years. The left cheek shows the beginning of a small crack and the extremely finely cut checkering worn smooth in a couple of spots. The stock features a left-side rounded shadowline cheekpiece and scalloped bone pistolgrip cap and boasts a 14? length of pull to the 1? basketweave Pachmayr pad. The arm features cocking indicators left and right and the front trigger is a single set, the safety is non-automatic. There are attractive black horn diamond inlays at the rear of the stock cheeks and a matching horn inlay at the forend tip. The rifle is sighted with a simple Bradley style front bead, the rear sight has been removed and a blank neatly fitted. Mounted on what are likely original see-through dual claw rings is a Hensoldt Wetzler Dialytan 4X telescopic sight with heavy German three post reticle and very good optics. The arm locks up well and seems to function properly mechanically. An extremely attractive, quality-made Bockbuchsflinte that would be a joy to have afield in the fall gunning seasons.
