serial #228847, 44-40 WCF, 20'' octagon barrel with an oxidized bore showing some faint rifling. The metal surfaces of this short rifle are mostly a dark brown patina showing some old pitting throughout, small dings, markings mostly worn away and moderate to heavy slot damage on the screw heads. Most of the moving parts now exhibit moderate play and there is heavy muzzle wear from years of riding in a saddle holster. The rifle is fitted with the appropriate crescent steel buttplate and the plain straight grip walnut buttstock and forend remain in fair condition with a 5'' crack left of the upper tang, 2 1/2'' crack right of the upper tang, numerous drying cracks along the butt and moderate handling marks. The forend exhibits play and shows a number of cracks forming at the edges of the right side while the left side shows splinters missing across the entire edge. The semi-buckhorn rear sight is a little bent and the front is a very worn-down brass blade. Despite it all the action is still functional and the rifle includes a copy of an emailed Cody research request that states the rifle was shipped on April 1, 1887 as described above. This is a salty gun in a desirable configuration with a lot of character. (138087-194) {ANTIQUE} [Kenneth Fry Collection] (1000/1500) Sold For 1092.50
