serial #8801J, 8x50mmR, 20'' barrel with a bright very good plus bore showing frosting in the grooves but strong rifling throughout. The metal surfaces of this Gendarmerie carbine are mostly a smooth blue-gray patina toning to brown under bright light in some areas and showing some small spots of light oxidation staining and freckling. The bolt is a mix of gunmetal and light gray patina showing some overall freckling. Some of the markings have softened from the years but are still mostly visible. There are eagle proofs on the right side receiver and breech, the barrel is 1892 acceptance-dated and there is an ''A'' at the heel of the buttplate. The smooth pistolgrip walnut stock with finger grooves is numbered to a different gun (9911O) although this number has been crossed out. The stock remains in very good plus condition having darkened from the years and showing some shallow smoothed-over old chips here and there, scattered scratches, light dings and handling marks. The bolt is properly un-numbered with the appropriate round cocking knob, the barrel is mismatched numbered ''8863G'' but has certainly been with this receiver for a long time, what appears to be an original brown leather sling is included showing some overall crackling and light staining and the carbine seems to function well mechanically. A very fine example overall of these rare and early Austrian carbines, all the more desirable in that it has not been updated to the later cartridge.
