1389. U.S. Model 1861 Percussion Musket by William Mason

Click on images for enlarged versions.

.58 Cal, 40'' barrel with a lightly oxidized bore. The lockplate is properly marked with ''U.S./TAUNTON'' and a Federal Eagle ahead of the hammer and with an 1862 date behind it. The barrel has the correct ''V/P'' inspection stamp and it is also dated 1862. The metal surfaces were nickeled long ago, there are a few light band removal marks on the barrel and scattered oxidation staining. It is believed that some muskets were nickel plated for naval use. The markings all remain strong and fully legible. The walnut stock rates very good as cleaned with slightly rounded edges and the expected handling wear from the years. The rifle is equipped with a correct rear sight and a tulip shaped ramrod. (208737-550) {ANTIQUE} [Dr. Louis C. March Jr. Collection] (800/1200) Sold For 1265.00
