230. Fine Philadelphia Percussion Halfstock Sporting Rifle by Philip Wilson and Co

Click on images for enlarged versions.

.45 cal, 32'' octagon barrel with a mostly bright, very fine bore which shows a few spots of very light pitting or oxidation. The barrel shows perhaps 95-97% original warm plum brown Wilson finish, showing some sparsely scattered spots of light oxidation or perhaps a few very light pinprick pits. It features a scant German silver blade front sight with shallow v-notch flattop rear and a windage and elevation adjustable lollipop sight on the tang. The barrel flat is marked ''Philip Wilson & Co Philadela'' and the patent breech and long tang show some strong remnants of color case-hardening with a dual inlaid silver bands on the breech. Bolster and tang show very light engraving with a borderline engraving on the ''Philip Wilson & Co'' marked lockplate, the plate and hammer showing some nice remnants of color case-hardening, the hammer neatly engraved in a dolphin head. The rifle features a simple German silver nosecap, dual oval wedge escutcheons and a semi-fancy triggerguard which is lightly engraved. There is a simple wing-shaped lightly engraved sideplate, faceted German silver butt and toeplates, the toeplate with an engraved pineapple front extension. There is a stylized German silver patchbox with an endearing game scene of two dogs fighting over a downed bird, the hunter approaching from the rear. The stock is curly maple and rates very good plus to fine overall with much original dark varnish, the expected light dings and handling marks from the years showing a coarsely checkered wrist with a nice flared left-side shadowline cheekpiece. The arm is double set trigger equipped and the lock is single acting without a safety rest on the tumbler. This is a very attractive and well executed Philadelphia sporter from this sought-after maker. (38937-340) {ANTIQUE} [Cletus Klein Collection] (2000/4000) Sold For 2530.00
