.42 cal, 28'' octagon barrel with a bright about excellent bore showing very deeply cut five groove rifling. The barrel retains nearly all of its maker-applied warm plum brown, the sharp edges toning to pewter, also with very widely scattered, very sparse light oxidation staining or light handling mark here and there from the years. The arm is equipped with a combination globe front sight with simple lollipop insert and a German silver blade sitting atop the globe. There is a fine fire blued semi-buckhorn rear sight in place, its elevator is no longer present, and there is a nice lollipop aperture sight atop the tang, the very top of it filed with a slight v-notch for utilizing the blade atop the front globe. The barrel is marked ''WM Lawrence'' and ''cast steel'' on its left diagonal flat. The breech and the long tang show some nice color case-hardening and loose sprays of open flowing scroll. The bar under lockplate and hammer are similar blue-gray case-hardened patina with the same light sprays of open scroll. The arm features German silver nosecap, tailpipe, oval wedge escutcheons nice dual spur triggerguard, also of German silver with a forward curving spur and rearward swirl. There is a heavy iron crescent buttplate showing remnants of some case-hardening and there is a nice German silver patchbox on the right side of the butt. The stock itself rates very good plus to excellent with nearly all of its original varnish and the light handling marks and dings one would expect from a hunted arm, the wrist coarsely checkered. There is an old repair to a crack through the highly figured grain in the wrist along the stock's right side between the triggerplate and upper tang, there is additional evidence of a repaired crack on the left side in a similar area, although the arm does not appear to have cracked completely through. Rifle is equipped with double set triggers and a single-acting lock and remains in a very fine state of condition. William Lawrence was active in Massachusetts, both in Worcester and Clinton Mass., this being a very eastern-like rifle in its architecture.
