.31 caliber, 26 1/2'' part round part octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. While this light rifle is not highly embellished it exudes the wonderful quality and style this maker was so well-known for; his most famous rifle being a percussion halfstock he made for President Grant. The top of the barrel is marked ''N.WHITMorE'' with a fancy engraved border while the back action lock is unmarked. The barrel features a fancy flared bolster and has a lovely transition from octagon to round with a 2 1/2'' section where it is hexadecagonal and then with beautifully turned rings at the final transition to round. The barrel tang shows some simple engraving and the rear sight dovetail blank is very nicely relief engraved with scroll. The only other decoration on the rifle is the round German silver patchbox which is engraved in scroll and shows a squirrel sitting on top and a pineapple shaped finial at the bottom. The condition is very nice with the barrel showing 75% evenly thinning original brown finish which is blending slightly to gray. The lock shows about 80% slightly muted original color case-hardened finish, the barrel breech and tang are similar with perhaps a little more gray on the tang. The stock is of walnut and shows some figure and has a long graceful cheekrest. The stock rates excellent with 95% original finish remaining and is fitted with German silver furniture consisting of the patchbox, buttplate, toeplate, fancy scroll triggerguard, tailpipe, oval wedge escutcheons and the forend tip is of pewter. The rifle features an adjustable single set trigger and is sighted with a globe front, engraved blank in rear seat and a neat folding lollipop type tang sight fitted in integral mount with knurled elevation set screw. The ramrod is German silver tipped, appears original and is broken with about 5'' missing from breech end. Just a very fine and completely honest percussion halfstock rifle by this well-regarded Massachusetts maker. (18937-321) {ANTIQUE} [Cletus Klein Collection] (2000/4000) Sold For 3335.00
