serial #6502, .56 cal., 29'' octagon barrel with swamped muzzle and an excellent bore, fastened by two wedges. This is a very nicely embellished rifle which remains in wonderful original condition. The lock features relief scroll engraving and is inlaid in gold ''V.CHR. SCHILLING / IN SUHL'', this maker address is also inlaid in gold on the top flat of the barrel in a single line. In addition to the lovely engraving, this rifle shows superb relief carving on the stock. The back of the hammer has fancy pierced scroll and the lock is equipped with a pivoting safety which is mounted in the same fashion as a flintlock frizzen, complete with roller mounted on tip of spring. The top tang and barrel breech show nice relief scroll engraving as do the two German silver sideplates. The barrel has three silver bands at breech and the rifle is equipped with adjustable double set triggers. The triggerguard shows the same lovely scroll and is also engraved with a beautifully executed walking buck on the bow of the guard. The tailpipe and buttplate are engraved as well and the ramrod thimbles show nice beaded edges with the top thimble showing a pronounced flat lip which is round and 3/4'' in diameter, its purpose is not known. The stock is checkered at the wrist and forestock with wonderful relief carved scrolls bordering the checkered panels. The left side of the butt shows a nice German style cheekpiece with a wonderful relief carved panel scene showing a wonderfully executed grotesque mask at center surrounded in relief floral scroll. The condition of the rifle is excellent with the barrel showing an even gray overall with handsome textured damascus pattern visible its entire length. The lock shows about 90% strong original color case-hardened finish with the hammer being finely stippled and forming a wonderful fish-like form. The barrel breech and tang retain about 75% original color case-hardened finish with most loss on the rear portion of the tang. The stock remains in excellent condition retaining about 95% original finish and with sharp checkering and crisp edges and carving. The stock also features a sliding walnut patchbox with a horn button at the center of a carved floral blossom and a round button shaped sling stud on toeline. The forend tip is also of horn and shows some chipping to the raised section at its leading edge and the rear tang screw is broken off - a very simple fix for a competent gunsmith. The rifle is sighted with a German silver blade front and single standing and single folding rear with nice arrow motif pointing toward muzzle. This is a very fine and very handsome percussion Jaeger rifle by this well-regarded Suhl maker. (18937-400) {ANTIQUE} [Cletus Klein Collection] (3500/5500) Sold For 4945.00
