serial #70975, 40-65 WCF, 24'' octagon barrel with full magazine and an about good bore that shows some scattered pitting. This rifle has many special order features including shorter than standard barrel, checkered fancy pistolgrip stocks, shotgun buttplate and a single set trigger. The condition of the rifle is very nice with the barrel and magazine retaining about 80% evenly thinning original blue finish which is just beginning to blend with a smooth brown patina. The action shows 85% original color case-hardened finish overall with some extremely light abrasions on the right side, one small area of light cleaning on the left where metal has become silvery, neither of these are obtrusive. The bolt and loading gate show about 80% original blue finish with loss due to even thinning. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of highly figured walnut and rate excellent with about 95% original finish remaining and showing sharp checkering. This rifle is equipped with a smooth steel shotgun buttplate and the early style pistolgrip with fancy rounded contour and ebony insert. The lower left tang shows an assembly number along with ''XXX S'' indicating the grade of wood and perhaps a shotgun buttplate. The matching number can be found in the tang inlet of stock and on the inside toe of the buttplate. The rifle is sighted with standard sporting front and rear sights along with a Lyman folding tang mounted peepsight. This rifle comes with a factory letter which states the following: Rifle, 40/65, octagon barrel, 24'', set trigger, checkered stock, pistol grip, shotgun butt received in the warehouse on January 21, 1893 and shipped a week later on the 28th. This is a very nice deluxe 1886 with considerable added appeal being a factory 24'' short rifle. (18969-1) /{ANTIQUE} (7000/9000) Sold For 9200.00
