serial #1753, .44 Henry RF, 24'' octagon barrel with a very good plus bore which actually shows strong rifling and only very light scattered pinprick pitting. The barrel is a pleasing even plum brown patina and is mostly smooth with a few widely scattered spots of oxidation which may have resulted in some light pinprick pitting, the sharp edges toning to the pewter gunmetal beneath but with the barrel markings and serial number remaining crisp. The frame has a lovely tarnished goldenrod-ochre patina with the edges softened only slightly, showing sparsely scattered very light handling marks from the years but tight sideplates which appear unmolested. The butt stock is a well-made replacement from many years ago, its fit is excellent and it shows some minor dings and handling marks consistent with use, it is stamped-numbered to the gun in the top tang inletting recess in a serifed font; there is an old repair to a tiny chip at the toe. The butt plate is original and matches in patina and is numbered to the frame at its toe, and the tang and the buttplate screws are all appropriately numbered ''1753''. The rifle is mounted with correct style sling swivels and the magazine follower thumbpiece appears to be an older repair. The rear sight is original and proper early production with the thousand yard graduation, the tang shows an extra hole from the period of use for early type tang sight; the proper sight dovetail in the frame is to the rear of the ejection port. The assembly numbers are matching on the barrel and the barrel collar and the gun seems to function well mechanically with a crisp mechanism. There is a four piece wooden and steel cleaning rod beneath the butt strap which appears to show age, but does not precisely match originals examples we have encountered. Many of these early Henry rifles saw Civil War use, particularly with Illinois, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky regiments along with 1st DC cavalry, 3rd U.S. Veteran Volunteers, etc. A very respectable early Henry rifle overall showing a well-done buttstock restoration.
