serial #141158, 38-40 WCF, 26'' part round part octagon barrel with a mostly oxidized bore showing some bright areas and faint rifling throughout. The special order features of this third model rifle include the 26'' part round part octagon barrel and set trigger. The metal surfaces are mostly a mix of dark and medium brown patinas, the barrel and magazine tube showing a few streaks of blue in the more protected areas and the action showing some silvery case-hardened patina scattered about. Most of the screw heads show some moderate slot damage and the magazine tube band is a little loose in its dovetail. The top cover screw is a more modern replacement and all of the markings are still quite clear. The plain straight grip walnut buttstock and forend remain in good condition showing a few thin drying cracks along the forend and butt, a shallow 2'' abrasion on the right side butt, a moderate patch of dings at the toe, overall scratches and handling marks from the years. The action is functional although the set trigger does not appear to be working correctly and the rifle is sighted with a sporting rear sight and German silver blade front. Included is a Winchester Gun Museum research letter stating that the gun shipped on December 11, 1883 as described above. A very solid example overall with a number of desirable features.
