629. Quality Ivory-Handled Naval Dirk

Click on images for enlarged versions.

This is a rather nice Naval Dirk with a lightly etched blade, turned antique ivory handle and gold washed ovoid guard. The blade itself is an elongated hexagon in cross-section, measuring 6 1/2'' overall with evidence of a very light cleaning, showing some remnants of its lightly etched decoration, primarily now a silvery gunmetal patina with remnants of oxidation and light pitting. The ovoid guard shows foliate and acorn engraving around its periphery, surrounding a ropelike center, this with strong gold gilt remaining, the grooved ferrule as well with strong gold wash. The turned antique ivory handle rates very fine showing nice drying striations from age. The dirk includes its original leather sheath with brass mounts, the throat, mid-hanger and tip are grooved brass showing a gilt wash, the exposed portions of leather very good with only some light flaking. There are some minor dings in the brass scabbard hardware from the years but they are unobtrusive and only add to the honest character of this handsome little Naval Dirk.
