26'' single unstopped fullered blade, 32'' overall length. The blade retain about 90% flaking period nickel plate with scattered fine oxidation, chips along the main edge and a small bend at the tip. There is no maker mark and only an [anchor] / 1861 is faintly visible at the ricasso. The hilt has a nicely tarnished brass guard, Phrygian pommel and leather wrapped wood handle. The quillion is marked ''3M / 967'' and a large ''24'' is stamped in the top corner of the guard which is starting to separate along the seam. The basket shows numerous shallow dents and has been later engraved ''U.S.S. Kearsarge / 1862-1865''. The leather is dried and cracking with chips missing at the guard and no wire wrapping. There is no scabbard present. An overall very good Naval Cutlass that possibly may have been carried aboard the famous Civil War ship or kept and engraved as a remembrance of service aboard that vessel.
