673. British Center Hammer Screw Barrel Flintlock Pistol by Verncombe

Click on images for enlarged versions.

.45 cal, 4'' barrel with a cannon-belled muzzle and turned medials and about very good smoothbore. The metal surfaces on this attractive coat or holster pistol are a lightly cleaned silvery gunmetal patina. There is a very light borderline engraving on frame and hammer, with oval panels at center reading ''Bristol'' and ''Verncombe''. The bow of the guard shows some very light floral decoration and there is a nice silver grotesque buttcap at the grip. The English walnut grip is smooth and rates very good as lightly cleaned many years ago, it has an un-engraved silver monogram plate atop the wrist and shows some lovely figure of grain. An early pistol which does not incorporate a sliding safety, the arm seems to function well mechanically and remains very attractive. Hugh Verncombe of Bristol was active roughly from 1746-1785.
