Amoskeag Auction Company Inc's Sale No. 109 is this Saturday and Sunday, April 2 and 3. The sale has a vast array of wonderful collectible and investment-grade firearms for all levels of collecting and nearly every collector discipline.
There is an exceptionally fine selection of rare Remington Keene rifles including prototypes [ 1 | 2 ], trials and factory engraved examples; there is a Remington Lee breechloading 1872 trials rifle, a Remington 1894 trials and numerous Remington Lee rifles offered as well [ 1 | 2 | 3 ]. On the subject of Remingtons there are some very nice modern factory-engraved Remington 1100 shotguns offered [ 1 | 2 | 3 ], two with gold inlays, one with what is likely the only factory cheekpiece.
Lever gun aficionados are certain to be pleased with the very nice, honest Henry being offered, along with a super 1876 Second Model Saddle Ring Carbine, three 1866 “yellow boys” [ 1 | 2 | 3 ], a nice selection of 1886’s [ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 ], with some very nice Winchester Model 92’s [ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 ], exceptional Model 1894’s including many special order rifles [ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 ], there is a nice array of Winchester Models 55, 53, and 71’s, including deluxes. There is an absolutely lovely Marlin Model 1894 carbine, a number of 1881 rifles [ 1 | 2 ] as well and a deluxe Model 1889.
There is a small but very nice grouping of Sharps rifles included in the sale featuring rather rare examples, most notably a Model 1851 Boxlock Sporting Carbine in very fine condition. There is a rather nice U.S. Model 1853 Martial Carbine, rare U.S. Model 1855 percussion carbine and a rare 36” barrel Model 1859 rifle. There is a very good-fine example of a very rare and early Sharps Pistol Rifle.
Fine sporting arms are highlighted by a number of rifles that were the personal arms of Col. Townsend Whelen [ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 ]. The good colonel is an icon and needs no introduction here, these rifles were carefully amassed over a period of 25 years and it is highly likely it is the last time they will see the secondary market for another 25 or 30 years. Other fine sporting arms include a magnificent Duane Wiebe custom takedown two-barrel Mauser magazine rifle, there is a lovely Mauser magazine sporting rifle by the gifted Len Brownell, complementing rifles by both Walter Abe and Gil Van Horn, fine magazine rifles by Kimber and an exceptional Kurt Jaeger Enfield magazine sporting rifle, fully engraved with carved stock. Double rifle enthusiasts will be pleased with the Holland & Holland 10 bore paradox double rifle, exceptional Daniel Fraser boxlock double ejector rifle, there is an interesting Midland Gun Company double hammer express rifle, a scalloped action double rifle by Merkel and a nice cased James Purdey percussion double rifle with accessories. There are two very nice large bore percussion stopping rifles, a six bore by Jover & Son, and a ten bore by Isaac Blissett.
There are some lovely shotguns to be had as well, including a number of Winchester Model 21's [ 1 | 2 ], custom Krieghoff’s [ 1 | 2 | 3 ], a round body ejectorgun by J Roberts & Son, a very nice Holland & Holland side lever double hammer ejectorgun, a rare and very fine Parker BHE double ejectorgun, and some nice percussion doubles as well [ 1 | 2 ]. There are the normal selection of nice Fox shotguns, L.C. Smith’s and British and American doubles.
There is a very fine Smith & Wesson .320 revolving carbine, there are numerous fine and rare Smith & Wesson revolvers including a Smith and Wesson No. 3, and a nice New Model No. 3 Australian revolver and shoulder stock. There is perhaps what is the finest Allen & Wheelock Center Hammer Army revolver to be offered in many years, and a super Remington Model 1875 single action revolver with German silver front sight and fabulous original blue. There are fine antique Colt revolvers offered including a Second Model Dragoon, Third Model Dragoon, and absolutely lovely and a very fine Gustave Young-engraved 1849 pocket, among others. Modern Colt revolvers feature what is likely the finest pair of Colt Old Model Flattop Target Model revolvers with all of the original blue in a lovely Hartley & Graham case. There is a superb custom engraved Colt Second-Generation Third Model Dragoon that was the personal property of Col. Rex Applegate and many lovely single action Army revolvers.
There is an exceptional offering of very rare Springfield Armory-manufactured officers swords including a rare 1872 first variation cavalry saber, and early U.S. Model 1860 Staff and Field officers swords [ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 ] and rare and exceptional swords owned by Brig. Gen. SV Benet and Lt. Col. George Mc C. Derby.
